What Is Preventive Health?

Practicing preventive health means getting screened for illness or disease before you feel sick. Regular screenings help your doctor catch health problems early, when they’re easier to treat.

Which screenings do I need?

Many serious illnesses don’t show symptoms in the early stages. That’s why it’s important to talk with your doctor about regular screenings even if you feel fine. Your doctor will consider factors like your age, health, and family history when deciding which screenings are right for you.

How do I start?

Seeing your doctor for a yearly physical is the best way to start. During this exam, your doctor can help find health issues before they become serious.

Many screenings are $0.

Your Tufts Medicare Preferred plan offers many types of preventive health services with a $0 copay. Ask your doctor which screenings are right for you:

  • Cancer screening (breast, cervical, colorectal, prostate)
  • Cardiovascular disease testing
  • Depression screening
  • Immunizations (flu, pneumonia, hepatitis)
  • Vision and hearing tests
  • Cholesterol check
  • Diabetes screening
  • Osteoporosis (bone mass measurements)
